The Coronial Process

Coroners in all Australian states and territories are required to conduct an inquest into the death of any person who dies in custody. Each state and territory has its own coronial legislation that gives the coroner broad powers of investigation. Typically, the coroner will make findings about a death, or suspected death, related to the deceased’s identity and how, when and where they died. The coroner may make recommendations for the improvement of legislation, policies, practices, services, training, resources and communication if they consider this is necessary to prevent or reduce the likelihood of future deaths occurring in similar circumstances. Sometimes a coroner will choose not to make formal recommendations, but instead may make suggestions or other useful comments.
